Villa De Guadalupe

It's been so hot lately that the kids at Villa de Guadalupe wanted to make some visors :)  They used foam letters, foam sport shapes, glue and other foam shapes. They so enjoyed making them.

Rancho Lindo

Due to this hot weather, I decided to make home made ice cream with the kids.  I will have the kids help me measure by teaspoons and tablespoons the ingredients (hop in some math).  Some of the ingredients will be sugar, milk, vanilla, salt and ice cubes as well as ziploc bags.  On Friday I will be having a treasure hunt.  In order to find treasure first they have to solve some riddles.  I will incorporate games into clues and etc...I will divide them into two or three groups...first group that finds the treasure will win a prize.  Lots o fun!!!

Lincoln Plaza

Here at Lincoln Plaza we will be doing hands on crafts with beads.   Our goal this week is still to accomplish our homework, after all academics is a priority here at Lincoln Plaza, while we work on our crafts, and continue our wii challenge.  Since the Olympics were this summer I have purchased a game in where it surrounds Olympic events four our wii.  As far as crafts we are doing a few parachute men, which pictures will be up soon, along with doing some key chains, such as a lion and a lady bug.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day and remember “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” – B.B. Biola Village

Hi everyone! How are you all doing? We’re doing great, here at the Biola Village we are all about sports. I’m proud to announce that most of my kids joined sports this year. Five of my girls did try outs last week and received great news today and they all made the Volleyball team in Glacier Point Middle School. I’m really happy because all these girls are good players.  They were practicing outside everyday and it all paid off.

Last week I did a lot of different activities with the kids, we haven’t finish the Robot made of recycling materials, and we’re looking for some eyes and arms for the robot.  It looks really cool.  We don’t want to put up the picture of the robot till is done. Ha-ha

Last Wednesday the girls asked me if they could have a manicure night and of course we had one, all the girls brought all their cute nail polishes and hand lotions. We had so much fun!

Q: Why did Cinderella get kicked off the soccer game?

A:  Because she ran away from the ball!

Joke of the Day

Q: What did the baseball glove say to the baseball?

A:  "Catch you later!"

Rancho Lindo

Our three crafts for this week,

1. Crazy creature pencil toppers using pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes and pom poms

2. Sun catchers, students get to paint them and

3. Finally pencil holders using craft sticks to glue on cardboard tubes and then paint and decorate....Enjoy!

Rolling Hills

"Highlights from the Hills"

Line the walls from floor to ceiling with recycled newspaper  bolt ends (butcher paper) and tada! - a great place for art work!.

Students expressed their thoughts through WALL MURALS at Rolling Hills. It made for a great start to a new school year. They  enjoyed "showing their school spirit". One cleaver Student wrote about YOLO Jr. High School "You Only Live Once".
Some splattered marker paint.  Others used markers  to create some cool cartoons characters, their school and of course rainbows. This was an activity that everyone participated in.   After SCHOOL at Rolling Hills ROCKS!

"Star Gazing at the Hills"

Every wonder what's up in the night sky?  Well, the Students had the opportunity to end "In the Good Old Summertime" with a fabulous guest who brought their telescope. It was exciting to have Tom Duarte, a local astronomer come by and share his equipment and knowledge with the families and Students at Rolling Hills. Everyone was excited to "spy at the moon".   Of course it had to be dark so we had after school - at 9 pm.

It was incredible to see the craters and general form and shape of the moon. Bringing it up close made it more real. Students also got a look at Mars.

The evening also included some great conversations. One which ended the evening, was how the word planets evolved from the Latin root meaning travelers. Then Tom explained the reason of the naming of the days of the week. Yes, every day has a meaning. Perhaps a little internet detective work will provide additional insight for the curious. Man has been charting the sky for centuries.

This opportunity was definitely "Moonlight Magic" and a highlight of the summer.

The evening ended with a special treat of "moon pies". Our moon tastes of chocolate and bananas - not "Swiss Cheese". Although here at RH we all understand why they say the moon is made of cheese. Just look into a telescope and then you will too!

Sunrise Villa

This week at Sunrise Villa, we worked on elephants.  The students got very creative when decorating them, so much so that they wanted to take them right away to show their parents!

Cottonwood Creek

I found this flag mural online and I liked the way it will bring the children together. I am going to start by seeing what the children know about this tragic day and I am going to give them the facts and answer their questions if they have any. On a couple of their hand cut outs I am going to have the children write their feelings on it, for example on my hand cut out I am going to write how much I appreciate the people who put their lives in danger and those who died to protect us. When we finish this project I will see what the children want to do with it and I can deliver their flag mural to the fire department.

Flag Mural

Make a mural out of the children's  hands.

Using a selection of red, white and blue construction paper, ask the class to draw around their hands and cut them out.  As a group, paste each hand onto a  larger piece of paper, producing a United States flag.  Alternatively, each  child may make a number of paper hands.  Affix the hands directly to a window; decide if the class wants the flag to face outwards for all to see, or to face  the classroom.

Joke of the Day

Q:  Why did the farmer feed his cow money?

A:  He wanted rich milk!

Clean Restaurant Joke

So these two roaches, Tom and Oscar, are hanging out next to a dumpster enjoying a snack. “Hey Oscar” said Tom to his friend Oscar, “You know that restaurant down the block? I went there yesterday to pick up some scraps, and I couldn’t believe how clean it was, I could practically see my reflection through the shiny waxed floor.” “Oscar” hollered Tom spitting the food out of his mouth, “please not while I am eating!!”

Biola Village

Hello everyone! Well here at The Biola Village we have all of our kids back in school. We’ve been doing a project with some of our recycling items we’ve been collecting the last couple of days. We’re building a “Robot” with stuff we have at home and the After School Program. The kids came up with this idea and we decided to do it. We’re using materials like: boxes, glue, tape, color pencils, silver paint, glitter, aluminum, gloves etc. We’re looking forward to see how this human size Robot comes to life! J

Lincoln Plaza

A picture tells a thousand words.  Enjoy this beautiful artwork!

Casitas Del Sol

Here at Casitas we're getting back into the start of the new year!   The Blog is an excellent source of back up ideas when we can’t seem to find an idea or project to work on with the kids!

We began the week by coloring and filling out a “All about Me”  coloring activity page.  It was interesting to see how the kids engaged in the project to see what their favorite food is and what they’d like to be when they grow up and so forth…..

This coming week we will work on reading the book “The Rainbow Fish” along with a few activities I found on the web to go along with the lesson.  This activity is a community building and friendship building on the unique qualities every person has and no one should be made fun of if he/she looks different.  We will send finished project photos.  I blew up a fish on large butcher paper and the children will write special qualities they look for in friends or oneself on scales and we will glue on “the Rainbow Fish.”

Villa De Guadalupe

Here at Villa De Guadalupe, the kids painted their pencil boxes for back to school.  A couple of the girls used glitter to make it look pretty and they had fun painting them.

Rolling Hills

"Braids and Bows" was a fabulous opportunity for just the girls at Rolling Hills to come together for a great presentation.

We had two presenters one presented how to make a flower bow. It could be used for a variety of decorative uses. The instructor was patient and showed the Students just how to make it. It was very impressive how she noted that if it didn't come out perfect it was okay and not to be frustrated.  She shared...."it's for fun, it's not a competition". This put all the girls at ease right away.

The second presenter spoke a little about personal hygiene. Even explained what that was. The girls then had the opportunity to get their hair braided as she used the Students as models to show various braids. Besides a regular 3 stranded braid she did a fish tail and a five stranded braid. This was very fun for them and they enjoyed the pampering.

Some "hair raising" ideas for looking your best for Back to School.

What was extra nice is that the presenters were girls themselves. It was great to see mutual respect. After the class they all chatted and were very appreciated of the time that the girl presenters took to come and share something that they didn't know how to do and had fun learning.

Goshen Village I

4 younger girls found and caught a baby lizard (It was in the building). They asked for a cup to put it in and I gave them one. Of course, they put it in there and made holes for it to breath.  Also put some leaves in it for food and a little water. They played with it gently and then the tail broke off.  I said it will grow back and they asked how?  I gave them the example of our finger nails and how they grow back  after they have been cut.  Amazing!

Rancho Lindo

Now that the olympics are over we decided to have our own little olympics...so welcome to our 2012 Rancho Lindo Olympics hosted by Maria in Lamont.  We will have the 100 meter dash, soccer kick, throwing, hurdles over cone, football catch, cup stackn', and standn' broad jump...it will take place in the playground and they will have water breaks and a ceremony with Medals!

Villa Del Rey

The kids are continuing to sketch and loving it!

Cottonwood Creek

I decided to set a somewhat long-term goal for myself here at Cottonwood Creek.  My goal will be very beneficial for the children.  I am calling it "Cool Keyboard Kids."  I am going to teach the children how to type without looking.  I am also going to show the children how they are supposed to sit while they type.

On this site www.freetypinggame.net/play.asp I found a game called Keyboard Triathlon, I think it will be a very good game to start the children with.  Once I see that the children are making progress I am going to cover the keyboard with a sheet of paper to see how they do and if they remember the keys. Once the children and I accomplish this goal, they will only get better and learn to type faster as time goes by.  With this new knowledge of how to type the children are going to feel accomplished and confident.

Lincoln Plaza

This week here at Lincoln Plaza we are working on many arts and crafts along with working on some wii sports action. This week our arts and crafts consist of a peacock, jumping jack and a palm tree with a monkey attached.  I will be getting pictures of our crafts as soon as we complete them.

Biola Village

At the beginning of the week I had the kids playing on this website called freetypinggames.net on this website the kids get to interact with the keyboard and learn new techniques to memorize all the letters in the board. On this website they have different options like games, lessons, test, a scoreboard, and the option of customize. I believe children are our future and we the tutors have the responsibility to encourage our children.

Here at the Biola Village we care about our community. The last couple of days we’ve been going for little walks around the apartments with a couple of plastic bags to pick up trash and recycling cans. When we go back from outside I had some refreshments ready for the kids so they got a little prize for going outside. We’re going to continue doing this activity at least once a week from this week on. I want the kids to care about their community and their environment.

Every Wednesday we have a “Girls & Boys Wednesday” this week the girls decided to make “BRACELLETS” and the boys to play “VIDEO-GAMES”. Most of the kids are going back to school on the 15th and the rest on the 16th as a result I’ve been trying to make it entertaining for them these last couple of days they have left from their vacation.

Villa Del Rey

Please enjoy these pictures.  We had fun working on puzzles, bracelets and outlining.
