Joke of the Day

Q. Why did the man put his money in the freezer?

A. He wanted cold hard cash!

Cottonwood Creek

Last week, along with playing outside, the kids and I also created another game out of the Power Play Campaign!  This is such a great curriculum to stay healthy and be fit.
We have been talking about portion control and had discussed how easy it is to get a serving of fruit a day, so I thought that by giving them a serving of these fruits, the kids would like this activity even more.
The kids loved it!  Thank you Power Play!

Spring is finally here!  Unfortunately with Spring here, everyone's allergies are kicking in and this week we decided to spend time working outdoors...I mean spending some time on outdoor activities...we also spent quality time inside with some wii action as well.  Also, throughout last week we made some beautiful flower bouquets to help the children enjoy nature, regardless of their allergies.  These are allergy free!  Yay!

Eating healthy means being healthy and staying strong. Therefore, my class wants to let everyone know that it is that time of the year again.  Drink lots of water and eat lots of healthy foods.

Most importantly stay out of the heat!!

Goshen Village II

Hello Everyone!

Here are some pictures of what the children have been involved in for the past two weeks...decorations for St. Patrick's Day, playing capture the flag from the book "Champions for Change," playing outside and stayin' active/healthy...We hope you enjoy them.

This week we manged to make this wonderful St. Patrick's day art project!  I thought the kids would get a kick out of this project because of the materials involved.  It was fun to watch them guess what they were going to do with cereal and cotton balls.  After many guesses I finally explained the project and let them go to work.  Of course it was hopeless to think that some of the cereal was not going to end up as a snack!  I think this is an awesome entertaining project!  Happy St. Patties day from everyone at Cottonwood Creek!

Here are some of our completed Pinatas for your viewing pleasure.  We are currently waiting for our Hello Kitty to be completed.  The artist has been taking her time and lots of effort in finishing her pinata/masterpiece.

Also, homemade puff paint?...well sort of.  Our students learn how to use proper measuring techniques and the science behind making new colors by combining colors we already have.  Arts & crafts is so much fun!

There's nothing better than doing your homework outside in the beautiful sunshine with your friends.  With weather like this, it's great fun to learn and absorb not only the beautiful sunshine but absorb all that knowledge as well.  Today like every other day is homework day...before we start to do any sort of activity outside or inside, we gotta do that homework.  Let's hear it for good grades!

Our piñatas are coming out great!!!  These are the two that are done so far...the rest still have a few more details to go.  So this week our goal along with enjoying this beautiful weather, I plan on teaching my students some basketball tips so they can have a 3 on 3 match.  Being that I have coaching experience in basketball and it is basketball season, I think we are going to take advantage of this awesome weather.  Friday will be our target day to have our 3 on 3 challenge along with showcasing our finalized piñatas.  Lincoln Plaza students have also enjoyed the reading challenge...it's refreshing to see that the first thing they do after logging on to their work stations, is go to the reading challenge website.  Very proud of my students and the goals they have set forth.

Today the class stayed indoors to work on their St. Patrick four leaf clover arts & crafts project.  They all cut out their own shapes/designs and then added some color to them.  As you can see in the picture below that's how they look now. Yea!  Hope everyone is having a good time getting ready for St. Patrick's day.

Knock Knock.

Who's there?

Boo.

Boo who?

Don't cry, it's only a joke!

Cottonwood Creek

This week we started our Power Play Campaign at Cottonwood Creek.  I introduced the program to the students at CC on Wednesday, we all reviewed the curriculum and the children’s thoughts were very positive on getting healthy and staying fit.

The first activity was Power Bingo.  First, we colored the Picture Bingo handout.  Then we went ahead and played the game.  The kids had to get their boxes signed...most of them managed to get fifteen boxes signed.  Wow!!!  Not bad.  Finally, I inspected the boxes and took a poll to see how many of the kids could've signed each box, no cheating.

I think this is going to be a great motivator for getting the kids moving and more aware of healthy activities to participate in.

Hello, wishing everyone a great day!

This week has certainly been interesting.  One of the kids at WP will be having their birthday over the weekend and the birthday boy and I have kept it a secret from the rest of the kids.  So I had the kids make birthday cards and little gifts...but they have no idea who it will be for.  I am sure they have been wondering who it could be all week long.  On Friday we are going to have a movie day and a few snacks.  I think the best way to reveal who the mystery birthday person is will be as we sing the happy birthday song and then say the "name."  Suspenseful!

Our mustache and kisses bouquet is finally complete!

Hello Coordinators,

This week we have begun to work on our pinatas which will take us all week to do. We began Tuesday and we will finish them throughout the week. The students are so excited...I made sure to tell them to be creative with them and this is an activity I have done in the past, working at other after school programs. I showed them a few pictures of some that students in the past have done such as an Angry Bird, another did Mickey Mouse, while I in the past made an Ice Cream Cone.

So many of my students at Lincoln Plaza have opened that creativity box and have come up with different ideas, one project revolves around a balloon shaped object and from there they will add on. The Hello Kitty project really stood out. I asked this particular student if she could do the project, her response to me "I can do it because I just have to try." I know I will see the creativity evolve throughout this week. How fun! Also, since this week is the last week of signing up for reading with a superstar, many of the students are really involved and have set up to reading for 40 minutes or at least 2-3 books depending on the length of the book. Many of my students said the books are a little easy but that they are books that are interesting and fun to read. That alone shows that they are beginning to like to read!!! Go Kids!!!

Spring Time Weather!

We have had some beautiful weather and the kids at Cottonwood Creek are welcoming the changing weather with different coloring activities and butterflies!  It is fun to look at how different and creative they get with these projects!  This week I also introduced the Power Play curriculum and the kids are ready to take the challenge to get healthy, stay fit and win the smoothie party!  YEA!!!

Rancho Lindo

In case you were not aware, the famous children's book writer of the Dr. Seuss books was born on March 2, 1904.  Although he is no longer with us, I decided to celebrate and honor him by reading some of his books to the kids.  The students also enjoyed board games and making some really cool arts and craft projects.  The students cut out their own hand prints to make Thing 1 & 2...his hat was made by using cookies, marshmallows and red candy.  The other fun activity will be where the students will learn about how a plant grows and everything that goes into planting and nurturing a seed.  It really is amazing to see a seed which is dead, come to life with water, sunlight and nutrients from the soil.

Since our weather has been nice, the students and I decided to go out and do some outdoor activities.  Half of the students went out and played football, while the other half went out and played freeztag.  I think having our students play outside is good for their health...it keeps them fit and it helps them to stay in shape.  Our children come alive in the outdoors...when it's this nice outside you can't blame them for not wanting to be inside the computer lab. Sometimes the simplest outdoor activities leave the most lasting memories for the kids.

As far as today, I'm going to print, laminate and cut out word cards.  Once I print the recording sheets, I'll place the word cards throughout the room for the students to find.  Then the students will search the room for Shamrock Syllable cards.  How fun!  Once students locate the word cards, they will read the words, count the syllables and write the words on the recording sheets according to the correct number of syllables in each word.  The final piece will be having the students read their words to me.
