Lincoln Plaza

As we know, Valentine’s Day is approaching and at Lincoln Plaza we are ready for it. I have shown my students a vast array of easy to make Valentine’s Day cards...many have actually thought about making them rather than buying them. After telling them a story about myself while growing up, going through tough times as does everyone and at the end of the day, after Valentine’s Day is over, the reality of how many of those cards were tossed vs. those that I actually kept. The truth of the matter is, I ended up throwing the majority of them away except a few from close friends. This has made everyone put 100% in finishing up the last of our cards and putting more thought into it along with creativity.

This week I showed my students how to make bouquets of kisses and hearts along with cupid’s wings. However, while surfing the web I came across this clothing line...I happen to know the guy who started it and after doing the lips bouquet, I have decided to add “Proper," which is the name of the brand, to this week’s crafts. Unfortunately I really want it to be a surprise for all the coordinators because whether we want to admit it or not, we all have 1920’s spirit in each of us. This week has also been a surprise to me because more and more kids from the Plaza are coming.  I believe the creativity we have not only shown through our projects but through each individual, sharing what we can do here at the Plaza has enticed more kids to join in the fun. Even the older students, like our teens, are more involved and have backed away from the Facebook Drama!!! Very proud of my teens.

Parksdale II

Today the students and I talked about bullying other people and why that's not a good thing to do.  I had the kids draw a friend on a piece of paper and name them.  After the kids got done coloring their friends I had them stand up and crumple up their friend (paper), toss it around, get angry with it and stomp on it.

All of the students did except one person...her name is Emily.  Emily looked around the classroom and said, "Ms. A, I can't do that to my friend Maya, that's bullying."  So I told the class to stop what they were doing and listen to Emily.  Everyone then realized that Emily was right, we should all stop bullying other people.  Let's respect each other.

Lincoln Plaza

We have been working on our banner for Valentine's day for over a week now and this is what our students here at Lincoln Plaza have accomplished.  Many of them liked the fact that they learned to sew...they really enjoyed this option for Valentine's card ideas.  Better than buying cards that everyone will end up throwing away...this way the kids put some thought into their arts and crafts.  I still have mine from when a former classmate gave one to me while in high school.  Speaking of high school, the high school kids are even getting involved...yea kids!!!

Sunrise Villa

In the spirit of the Martin Luther King holiday, the students at Sunrise Villa/ Villa Hermosa wrote mini versions of their own "I have a dream..." speech.  All of the students were very creative in their speeches as well as drawing awesome pictures that represented their speeches.  I'm very proud of them!  Go Civil Rights!

Lincoln Plaza

Last week many of my students began to talk about what they wanted on their Valentine’s Day cards and that they asked their parents about them.  However, after much thinking while watching the Patriots game and one thing that really stood out was many of them mentioned that they weren’t probably going to buy any because they had no money.  Another factor that really stood out was when I was a child, I never really saved any of those cards.  So in reality it was a waste of money.  So this week after much thinking about it, I have decided to show my students how to make their own Valentine’s Day cards where some will keep them and later down the road a few will look back and think about that particular grade and who gave it to them. This week and next week these cards will be our focus.  This week they will be learning how to make Cupids Arrow, Heart Bags made out of felt and a Heart Card made from felt as well.

Today the kids and I are honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.  We all know that he fought for freedom/civil rights so that everyone can be viewed as equal...it doesn't matter what race, creed, religion you are, we are all the same in the eyes of God.  So friends, "WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS OR WE WILL PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS."

One of my students came to class with this quote from Dr. Martin Luther King so I thought I would share it with all of you, "LOVE IS THE MOST DURABLE POWER IN THE WORLD."

Let freedom ring!!!

Lincoln Plaza

Now that the Holidays are officially over with, another one approaches.  At Lincoln Plaza we are getting ready for Valentine’s Day!  My students and I are focusing in making sure our computer lab is decorated with Valentine’s Day decorations.  Although it might be a month away, we are getting ready for it and enjoying every minute of it.  Last week we began our stained glass glue hearts along with a tissue paper heart.

Our stained glass glue hearts took a week to be completed simply because it does require a lot of glue.  This week we are doing some Valentine’s Day flowers, red velvet cupcakes and begin a sewing Valentine’s Day flag that is supposed to be a two week project.  Pictures are to come as soon as our projects begin to dry. We are also beginning a fitness challenge with the wii using the Just Dance games.

Work done by the kinder!!!!  Very proud of them that they can participate with the older kids even though I change it up a little for them.

Rancho Lindo

Due to the football playoffs, we are still working on our cut out helments and team names...the kids are really liking the project.  On Wednesday, it was movie day plus I made pancakes for them to eat...we also started making hearts for next month...yes Valentines day is right around the corner.  Next week's plan will include painting a vase, piggybank, and a wooden box...they will put a logo of their favorite football team on it.  Another craft I had them doing was a door sign using lolipop sticks to make a sign with foam letters, "DOING MY HOMEWORK."  They could put up the sign at home...cool idea!!!

Today the kids and I are doing an activity on Martin Luther King. The kid's are happy to learn about everything he did for everyone on civil rights. Today the kid's learned that we're all the same that it doesn't matter what race, color or religion you are, we are all brothers and sisters.

Lincoln Plaza

This week at Lincoln Plaza our activities included a vast majority of crafts!!!! This week our goal was to start and finish a hand puppet!!!! Last week while I was looking for craft ideas for this week, I came across felt hand puppets. As I looked at it and decided whether it would be easy enough for my students, many of them begged for us to do this project. I did warn them that we would have to sew the puppet; many of them said they really wanted to do it. So, at Lincoln Plaza they are ready for the challenge of this lion felt hand puppet. I felt that the younger grades can do this project too, but I modified it for them instead of felt they will be using foam and paper bags. This way the younger grades can also participate in the hand puppet making and not feel left out. This week we are also doing some crowns and bedazzling them. The students here show their creativity and imagination as if they where a King or Queen and how would they want their crown to look like.

Since this week is the beginning of a new year, I felt that I had to have a discussion with my students about what they really liked about this past year. One thing that I am glad that happened was I came along onto this new team of coordinators and got blessed with students who are willing to take on any challenge handed to them and successfully complete it without giving up. Even though it was frustrating for them when it got tough they completed it because they learned from me that failure isn’t an option. I feel that this New Year will bring new challenges and I know my students will successfully complete them no matter how hard it might be. I believe that by doing this exercise with your students it not only helps you learn a little more about them, but it also gives you ideas of what projects you can do for the new year and if the level of difficulty should go up.

Hope everyone has an excellent New Year and a safe one.

This is what we have so far completed here at Lincoln Plaza!!!! it took only a day to complete the puppet!!!!!! Simba down and now a Teddy Bear to go!!!  Lincoln Plaza Kids Rock!!!
