Lincoln Plaza

Hello Coordinators,

Here at Lincoln Plaza, besides avoiding the heat as of mid week, we have enjoyed playing various sports and some crafts. Two weeks ago I assigned my students a special assignment in the computer lab.  I found out that one of my high school students will be finishing school this summer and what brought joy to my heart is that this student is only a junior.  Wow!

This very highly intelligent student made me realize that at such a young age, they should have ideas of what to do when they grow up.  When I asked her about her future education, college came into the conversation...I asked her about colleges and she said she was going to work in a packing house with her mom because making money is more important.

So what I developed was a worksheet where the students from 6th and up are to research 3 colleges and 3 jobs that interest them...they must fill out the worksheet along with a paragraph on each career option and why they picked it, not just because it offers a lot of money either. We have been working on this for a while now and many of them have thought about colleges especially my high school students.

This week we also made some tulips because many kept asking if I knew how to make flowers out of felt like the ones we did for mother's day.  So I showed the student's how to make tulips from felt and taught them how to create it by finding a template and being creative all around.  Enjoy!

Parksdale

Hello Everyone,

So the weather is getting hot...well, that the summers in the central valley.  We're getting creative on how to keep cool, we've been making some delicious cold smoothies with ice cream to keep us cool.  Today I had the kids get into groups of 6 for some competitive math games.  My winning team got to use the computers for half an hour...go winning team. This is a fun way to get the kids involved in math and keep their brains fit throughout the summer.  Please enjoy the beautiful painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Greetings,

Every Friday is "Fun Friday."  Basically, I let the children decide what fun activity they want that Friday.  This week the kids decided on movie day. The movie was called "Open Season" and as you see the kids are very much enjoying it.

Cottonwood Creek

Hello!

As promised here are the pictures from the crafts the kids made for Father's Day! First, the kids made a picture frame using popsicle sticks, yarn, magnets, and little trinkets for decoration. We started with just "weaving" the yarn onto the Popsicle sticks and going all the way around the frame. After that, we took the picture I had snapped a week prior and we glued/taped it to the frame.  Then, we placed a blank piece of construction paper on top of the picture so that the kids could write a little message. Finally, we put the magnets on the corners of the frame.  After the finishing touches the frame was done and could be displayed on the fridge!  We printed a poem and the kids took the little gifts on Friday (keep in mind this took us a few days because the weaving took some time).  The end result was wonderful, so it was well worth it.

The older kids also worked on refrigerator magnets for gifts for their fathers.  We used the air dry clay again and they were allowed to make what ever they desired. They let it dry for a couple of days and came back to paint them. After that, we just put the magnets on the back of the art work and it was ready! W

e enjoyed making gifts last week and we sure kept busy as well. The kids loved it and they came and told me all their dads had loved them too!

Hello All,

As you can see, we've been busy! This last week the children were very active. They played 'Apples to Apples', we had some fun bobbing for cherries, and we also made some Banana Split Sundaes! It was very fun and delicious.  Nothing but smiles among the kids.

Self-Help Enterprises - Multi-Family Housing

Here's a sneak peek at our Multi-Family Housing video that our very own Roberto will be in.  Keep an eye out for it!

Washington Plaza

Hello Everyone,

Now that Father's Day has past, we had a great discussion about it. A couple of kids had parties for their dads and they described their day to us. One of the families went to the beach.

Unfortunately, not all of the children get to see their fathers very often, so I am having them write a letter with a drawing telling their father how much they mean to them. That way they can hand it to their father next time they are together.

Cottonwood Creek

During these past few weeks we have been busy creating different crafts. First off, we started to make a classroom quilt. Each child got a piece of colored felt and some fabric markers. They went on to design and sketch what they wanted to go on the piece of fabric. Once they had it decorated and were satisfied with the work they had done they let it dry. We hung it on a wall, that way all of us got to enjoy the works of art!

Since the kids were also celebrating the end of the school year we made a memory book, which they got to color, decorate, and put together.

After that, they had a "autograph" day where they got to get their peers' signatures and wrote messages in the book they had created as a keepsake of the year.

We also started to do some fun physical games that would be suitable indoors because the weather is so unforgiving. The kids seem to like them and might even play them inside their own homes.

Father's Day is coming up, so we started working on their gifts, poems, and refrigerator magnets. Photos to come next week! Hope everyone enjoys their weekend with their father/father figure!

Catapults!

Goshen Village II

Hello everyone!

Last week the kids made food with clay and with it they made a 'healthy food plate'.  This is a project from the book "Champions for Change."

Also, they learned how it is to be blind. They touched different objects and learned how to 'see with their hands.'

Friday, the kids and I made a fruit pop. What better way to keep cool and healthy? Everyone brought their favorite fruit to share with everyone else. The first thing we did was cut out the fruits. Then we placed them in a plate. Afterwards we all had a chance to pick our fruits and put them in a cup; we then added chile with water. Finally we put the fruits in the freezer, over night, and the next day we had our fruit pops ready to eat!
