Goshen Village II

Many Native American tribes made finely-crafted birch bark canoes.  So the kids made a small model using construction paper and yarn. Recalling that today is the day of the Native American.  Enjoy!

Lincoln Plaza

Hello Coordinators/Educators,

After noticing several behavioral issues here at Lincoln Plaza, I have decided to share my techniques with all of you especially dealing with young adults.  I find that working with young adults (grades 6 and up), they need to be given a much wider selection of options along with consequences.  This technique happens to work with my younger grades as well because it helps them develop responsibility for their actions.  When I have a behavioral issue I ask the individual to step outside for a minute, reflect, think about what they did to merit the consequence and when they are ready to act like a mature young adult and be respectful, then they are welcomed back in.  For instance, a few weeks ago I had a student start testing my authority and was being disrespectful.

After trying to have a serious conversation about a serious topic, this young adult decided to act immature/disrespectful, so I asked him to step outside while the rest of us decided to have a serious conversation and when he was ready to take things serious he was welcomed back in.  As he was walking out he responded with “well I am not coming back.”  Later his mother came to ask why his son was upset and that he was trying to tell her what the situation was but he couldn’t say it because he knew he would get in trouble at home.  After I explained to his mother the situation and what had happened, she came back with her son and he apologized for his actions and that it wouldn’t happen again.  He also apologized for past incidents and did say that he would respect me not only as an adult but as a teacher.

Ultimately coordinators, we are all teachers in one way or another.  We aren’t just at our centers to just help students with homework or show them how to do arts and crafts...we TEACH these students how to be well balanced citizens who will eventually go to college and become good citizens of our communities as adults.  Since coming to Lincoln Plaza, I have seen a few of my students evolve into positive role models for the younger students.

Just the other day I had a student tell me that she would like to be a teacher because the techniques I showed her to help her little brother worked.  This student brightened my day and its moments like these that I believe we need to appreciate.  If a student is having a hard time reading it helps when we go that extra mile in giving them other resources so they can read, write, and have a better appreciation for learning.  After all, we are guiding the future leaders of tomorrow.

So next time you're confronted with a behavioral issue, recap on what options you have at your disposal.  When students understand consequences...growth, maturity and life's learning lessons come into play and help mold them into better people.  I find that the option of only suspending a child doesn’t work alone because eventually we don’t adjust the behavior nor help them improve it.  Choices, reflection, communication and consequences are the keys for children to learn and adjust their behavior as they mature.

Have a pleasant day and remember, we aren’t just coordinators we are also educators.

Ms. Angie

Lincoln Plaza

Good Afternoon Educators,

Here at the Lincoln Plaza we have finally finished our scarecrows and we are beginning with some awesome fall leaves and apple activities.  We have decided to choose activities that take up plenty of our time before the holidays are here. It seems like it was just summer and with a blink of an eye it is apple picking season.

This week my students and I discussed what activities they would like to do, some said more scarecrow and apple stuff and less of the wii challenge. So this week we focused on finishing all our scarecrow items along with beginning new ones. We have also added some apple thank you cards for our parents.

Each student has made two of them and dedicated them to their parents and thanking them for any reason they have to be thankful for. One example, a student thanked her mother for all the sacrifice she has done for them in order to get that life she couldn’t have.  So in return I did an appreciation card for all of my students for being who they are and keeping up with being STARS.

Last week our students learned how to write their names in Hieroglyphics and many of them learned how to be patient.

Students also got to do a decoration for Mardi Gras and learned that the balloon wasn't a head, we also did a paper scarecrow where the students developed a few skills in the art and science of using scissors.

Here is some of our fall art work that we have created so far...with more to come.

Have a wonderful day and God bless.

Ms. Angie

Joke of the Day

Q:  What do you call a bear with no teeth?

A:  A gummy bear!

Q:  What do you call a bird in the winter?

A:  Brrr-d!

Parksdale

This one is a "mental" exercise - don't use paper and scissors - just imagine in your mind:

Take a sheet of paper - any size that you happened to have (remember, just imagine this paper). Now fold this sheet of paper in half and now fold it in half again, at right angles to the first fold. Now you have four thicknesses of paper. Now imagine you use scissors and cut through all four thicknesses, right down the middle of the paper, parallel to the first fold you made. Now, imagine, how many pieces of paper do you have now? Don't get paper and scissors to solve this one - try to picture this in your mind!

Lincoln Plaza

Good Evening Coordinators,

Here at Lincoln Plaza we have began doing a few crafts to welcome the fall.  We have began doing a few projects involving apples due to it being apple picking season. I told my students about my apple picking adventure on the East Coast.

They asked if there was something like that around the Valley, I am working on locating a location so they can enjoy that experience with their family. We began to work on a few Scarecrows and a few pumpkins.

This month our focus is welcoming the fall and getting ready for the winter. Pictures will be posted as soon as we complete all of our art work. As always we are still keeping up with our homework and getting further with our wii challenge, this week we are focusing on Zumba.

Have a wonderful evening!

Ms. Angie

Biola Village

Hello everyone, the kids and I have been doing a couple of projects during the week. The first project we did was updating our Open & Closed signs. We have been wanting to create new signs for a while now and we finally did them. They look awesome!  Yea!

The second one was a mouse looking dinosaur that all the kids created.  The funny part was that they started making a box and they ended up making a flying dinosaur that looks like a mouse with a spiky tail.  LOL!

Casitas Del Sol

Students read a one page report that I printed off the Scholastic kids web page on what happened on this tragic day 9-11-2001. Children were saddened by what they learned and some of them were not born yet or at least two years old.

They got the opportunity to answer questions after reading the passage and draw a special picture or message to remember this tragic day.

Paper Airplanes

Here’s one simple activity I tried with the kids the other day.  I gave each child a sheet of white paper and asked them to make the fastest plane just using the one sheet of paper. Here’s the fun part, each plane needs a motor right?...we were creative.  To keep it simple we used can tops. They needed to place the can tops in key places on the plane. The winner would be the plane that would make it the farthest with the most can tops. Pretty fun right?!

Titanic

Using our imagination I came up with this other challenge for the kids.  It’s a teamwork activity which means that they have to pick a partner. This time the challenge was with paper ships. The rules were simple, all they had to use were these materials:

·A sheet of white paper
·Tape
·Markers
·Scissors

Here’s the fun part, this time the ship that lasts the most time on board with the most amount of pennies wins.   Yeah!

Joke of the Day

Q. What did the gum say to the shoe?

A. I’m stuck on you.

Casitas Del Sol

In September ,Casitias del Sol Community Center focused on Community Friendship building.  Being it's back to school we read the book "Rainbow Fish" and compared it to the kids' daily lives in school.  For example, when they meet new kids who may look or speak different. We also discussed the importance of treating others as you would like to be treated.

We discussed clothes, shoes, looks, and so forth. We then discussed how people's feeling can get hurt by selfish behavior.  Some kids may end up like the rainbow fish, with no friends to play with, if they think they are better than other people.

We worked on an entire unit that focused on readings from "Rainbow Fish."  We then filled in questions sheets, word scrabble, math word problems, writing short senstences, mazes, connect the dots, coloring, and matching flash card games (print two copies for this game), all related to the book of course.

As our final group project, I used an overhead projector and we blew up the coloring page and placed scales on the fish, these scales mentioned traits that the kids look for in friends.
