Rolling Hills

"Highlights from the Hills"

Line the walls from floor to ceiling with recycled newspaper  bolt ends (butcher paper) and tada! - a great place for art work!.

Students expressed their thoughts through WALL MURALS at Rolling Hills. It made for a great start to a new school year. They  enjoyed "showing their school spirit". One cleaver Student wrote about YOLO Jr. High School "You Only Live Once".
Some splattered marker paint.  Others used markers  to create some cool cartoons characters, their school and of course rainbows. This was an activity that everyone participated in.   After SCHOOL at Rolling Hills ROCKS!

"Star Gazing at the Hills"

Every wonder what's up in the night sky?  Well, the Students had the opportunity to end "In the Good Old Summertime" with a fabulous guest who brought their telescope. It was exciting to have Tom Duarte, a local astronomer come by and share his equipment and knowledge with the families and Students at Rolling Hills. Everyone was excited to "spy at the moon".   Of course it had to be dark so we had after school - at 9 pm.

It was incredible to see the craters and general form and shape of the moon. Bringing it up close made it more real. Students also got a look at Mars.

The evening also included some great conversations. One which ended the evening, was how the word planets evolved from the Latin root meaning travelers. Then Tom explained the reason of the naming of the days of the week. Yes, every day has a meaning. Perhaps a little internet detective work will provide additional insight for the curious. Man has been charting the sky for centuries.

This opportunity was definitely "Moonlight Magic" and a highlight of the summer.

The evening ended with a special treat of "moon pies". Our moon tastes of chocolate and bananas - not "Swiss Cheese". Although here at RH we all understand why they say the moon is made of cheese. Just look into a telescope and then you will too!
